I love this, Mari. As someone with multiple chronic illnesses, I have so much more time than I have energy. And “wasting” time is how I settle my nervous system. I hate that we live in a society where we have to optimize productivity in order to feel valuable (and pay the bills). Life is so much more than getting things done.

I'm in the middle of a big life transition right now, mourning what just ended and anticipating what is to come, so this reminder comes at the perfect time. Thank you Mari, for reminding us all that we already HAVE the time! I'll be reclaiming what is already mine and marveling in the present.

“Sit there side by side and wonder at each other.” I want to do this much more often with many more people.

Isn’t it wild to think that a post like this is so countercultural? But it is! And you are right on the money. I had a very dark season where I reached serious burnout (I ignored it until my body started to do some crazy things to get my attention) and my therapist told me that my only job apart from my family (husband and 4 kids) was to watch grass grow. I thought she was nuts. I thought it was impossible. But I did it and would you guess that I grew in far deeper ways than I ever could have “maximizing” all of my minutes? I am genuinely a different wife, mother, human being because of that year watching the grass grow.

I know that this is not even remotely the same thing as a human child, but I am a new horse owner (parent? partner? life coach?) and for the last year I've been feeling this immense pressure to optimize, do everything "right," never miss an important "window," and your story with this just gave me immense peace. X Things You Need To Do lists are absolutely brutal for OCD brains and I appreciate being reminded that I can just...not read them? WHO KNEW!

Love love love.. I’m halfway through a reflection about a snail! 🐌 I have friends in my mid life journey who are encouraging a slowness and I am increasingly embracing it x

I know this post isn't about this at all because you don't value efficiency (me neither, I just realised it thanks to this article)....but I bet some of this could be solved by getting a dishwasher. :D I also don't have one and it's so annoying but unfortunately there's no plumbing for it in my flat.

This is so lovely - what a nice reminder of the simple things we can do to move through life in a more kind, intentional way ✨

Such a delight - I just ordered your previous texts as well.

I love the graphic novel - the ideas are lovely.

SO much travel.

I'm setting up my own creative space this weekend to take on a daily drawing challenge.

I've pulled off one a week; we shall see how I fare.
