Your previous suggestions were instrumental in planning my last trip to NYC. Show tunes! Japanese stationery! Places I would never have found on my own. (I wanted to thank you for this at the retreat I attended, but I was too shy.) This feels like a sign that it's time to plan another visit! Thanks in advance! ;)
I need to print this entire post and keep it handy! I have lived in Connecticut my entire life, typically an hour’s train ride away, and have only been to NY for touristy things (concert at Radio City, Broadway play, the Bronx Zoo, requisite CT schoolgirl field trips to Statue of Liberty, Museum of Art/Natural History, etc). Never been to Brooklyn. Never been to Chinatown. Never been to Williamsburg. In October, we took the train in and walked around Central Park FOR THE FIRST TIME (and I’m 58!)
I think it has something to do with my overwhelm of the city from when I was young and overwhelmable…. After the Central Park visit, I said ‘this was doable, this was cool, we should do something like this again’.
Of course we haven’t, but this post gave me a lot of great ideas!! Thank you!!!
Elle! I think your story is so common, which is why I love sharing these tidbits! Of course the city is so overwhelming--it still is for me!--but you're right, once you dip your toes in, you realize the water's quite warm ;) My mom moved to NYC at age 70 and everything you mentioned was a first for her. There's plenty of time!!
Oh Mari! I have been mentioning you and this topic so many times since you posted — have your ears been burning? 😁 I just did again yesterday telling two friends (who are both intrepid New Yorkers, take subways, the whole 9 yards) — one said even after all this time she felt she hadn’t explored Brooklyn enough and we might all try to go together. I just want to thank you again for taking the time to write out the post. Very inspiring to this homebody! ❤️
Dear Mari, I can’t thank you enough for writing such beautiful and thoughtful NYC itineraries! I’m from India and I’m planning to visit the States for the first time in September next year. NYC is to be my first stop but I knew it would be overwhelming to plan for. I was almost gonna request you to write a guide when this newsletter came in my inbox and it was like en early Christmas present!
Please keep writing such guides, for other cities that you’ve been to, like Miami or Madrid. Also, your post has motivated me to explore my own city of New Delhi in a similar fashion. If you ever come to India, I would be more than happy to share that with you! Much love & Merry Christmas!
Heavy sighhhhh I want to go back!! My husband asked what I’d do if he died first and I said that I’d move to NYC (likely UWS, which just hits right for this Midwestern Seinfeld-lovin gal). I’m so grateful I got to do a ton of classic touristy stuff. This list just makes me crave the life of a local though!!
Yessss Upper West Side Best Side!! Seinfeld shaped 95% of what I thought NYC would be like, so that's a clear reason why I feel so at home up there. I'm so pleased we have our widow plans in place--I'll be on the first flight to Spain. Meet me for a cerveza??
I love that SO MUCH! I miss the early days of living here when I'd so often take myself on solo day dates and explore a whole new little world--but, as a fellow NYer, you've reminded me that I still can!!
Ugh this makes me want to move there SO bad! LA native and 32 years later I’ve never left 🙃…but what a magical city New York is, every time I’ve been ✨🤍
Awww I love that so much! LA is so lush and paradisiacal and of course everyone here is always pining to move there!!! I do remember visiting a couple years ago and a friend telling me that LA wasn't "romantic," which I found so interesting. I mean, of course it can be--and is! But it made me look at NYC a little differently: what can often strike me as absolute chaos can also be romantic. Come visit any time please!!! xoxo
Yes!! I’ve lived here all my life and never get bored because, much like New York, every neighborhood has a completely different ~vibe~ and charm to it.

Oh my gosh Emily! This is the best thing ever!!!! I'm soooo happy--and yes yes please come back! I'd love to go stationery shopping with you :)

Oh my gosh, done and done!! 🍻
I am a New Yorker and I saved the post.
I am gonna do “day trips” to the neighborhoods, take your recommendations and make it a romantic day/s for myself!!!

Makes me want to visit asap
Please do!!!!!

As a former New Yorker (and still a New Yorker at heart) with a kid going off to college there next fall, I so love this! I ❤️ NY!
Lucky mom!!! It will be SO MUCH FUN to visit and see it through your kiddo's eyes!! Excited for both of you :)
thank you!
